Home » Barbaro Worsens - Might Be OverJuly 13, 2006Barbaro Worsens - Might Be OverOnce a triple crown hopeful, Barbaro is in a grave state of affairs. Recently it starting to not look good for Barbaro. Today, it looks downright grave. He no longer has just one cast on. He now has two fiberglass casts on both of his hind legs. While Barbaro appears to be alert and perky, all is not well inside him. There’s a very real possibility that he may be put down, which will send a stunning shockwave throughout the horse racing world. Barbaro has developed a very serious hoof disease and Dr. Dean Richardson is now calling Barbaro a “long shot†to survive. How serious is it? Richardson said that “it could happen within 24 hours.†Barbaro has laminitis in hi left hind leg. This disease is often fatal. What are the signs? Well, Dr. Richardson said, “If he starts acting like he doesn’t want to stand on the leg, that’s it. That will be when we call it quits.†In an effort to help Barbaro shake the disease, they took off 80% of his left hoof wall. If Barbaro starts to suffer, the humane thing will be to put him down and that’s just what Richardson is watching for. By this time tomorrow Barbaro could be dead. Barbaro is being given pain medication as they try to do whatever they can to save him. It looks very grim for Barbaro. I will update as I get more information. While we all have been pulling for Barbaro, it looks like we need to get ready to say goodbye. One moment in time and a fateful step has led us all the way from a possible Triple Crown champion to Barbaro’s possible death. 6 Responses to “Barbaro Worsens - Might Be Over”Leave a Reply |

i remembered watching Secretariat and thinking that I was seeing a miracle-that I would never see a horse that magnificent again. Then I saw Barbaro run in the derby and cried. I really beleived I was seeing a second Secretariat-a horse that was perfect in heart, mind and soul. When Barbaro broke down I prayed as hard as I did when my own horses were injured. I cried today when I found out that God’s answer to my prayers was “no”.
I know in my heart that Barbaro is with the mighty Secretariat and I can hear the conversation now…”you know i’d beat your records”..”No son, no way” “Well, lets see old man…wanna run it?”…I can see them now, thundering around heaven, safe, whole and pain free.
Those of us that work around horses know the good the bad and the ugly. As I write this email, I am waiting myself to hear if one of my mares will be put down due to a high fever that they cannot get under control. However, no matter what the night brings, come morning, I will be back in the barn because there is no sound so sweet as that nicker in the morning down the shed row-no sight so warm as those big brown eyes. God bless us every one- and the magnificent animals we are previleged to work with.
